Loving Touch

"Uncle Jason, what big hands you have!!'   "Better to love you with, dear child."

True Love

True love is feeding PRUNES to a little one.  Isaac loves prunes and his Peepaw loves him so that is the perfect combination for sharing prunes.

TENNIS PEEPAW???????

Isaac loved Danny's tennis racket and was able to move it in all sorts of directions without dropping it.  So maybe when we return in 3 years they can go out and PLAY BALL!!  For now, he is enjoying being pulled by us in his Radio Flyer Wagon and we are enjoying doing that.  We are at the beach this week and then on to Lakeland for services at our church, Kathleen Baptist, Sunday, August 17, and then work in the storage unit to decide what we are keeping and taking to our shed in Augusta, GA.    Then we are on our way back to see "Sweet Isaac" for a few days before we go to Atlanta for our appointment service Sept. 10 at First Baptist Church, Jonesboro, GA.

Manatees and MAC

THIS IS A TEST....HA!!!
We are at Cocoa Beach, FL, spending a few days at the beach with Jason.  He drove us to a lock where the water is released or contained and manatees wait impatiently for a boat to come through so that they can either return to the ocean or back to the warmer water of the Banana River.  It was a joy to see these huge sea animals, "sea cows" come to the surface for big breaths of air.
I am practicing learning how to blog.  I have a new Apple computer and Jason is trying to give me lessons.  Danny said he did not want to learn Apple since all our work is Microsoft BUT I think he is enjoying learning some things about Apple also.  And of course he is so savvy with electronics he doesn't need a lot of help.  I hope I can get to the point where I can do the blogging.

Isaac is ONE!

Isaac celebrated his first birthday, July 25. Where has this year gone? We all enjoyed his party because he had so much fun. He was so happy and never fussed for over 4 hours. We gave him this little Radio Flyer car...we thought they only made wagons...but they also make this cute car. So he enjoys being pushed by us or letting the handle down and walking behind it himself and pushing. So we have already put many miles on it of pushing..ha. He squeals with delight in it and of course that delights us. It is really a fun car with horn and radio and signal light buttons and gas tank and his squeal. You just can't have a better car than that when your grandparents are all so happy to push you around like a king and gas costs you nothing.

My sister, Dorothy Died

My sister (Claudia's sister), Dorothy Alliston, died Wednesday, July 16th. She was 80 years old and 16 years older than I. She had spent the last 10 years in a nursing home in Columbia, MS. Her journey was a painful, emotional one and we are happy that she is out of that pain and with the One, Jesus, Who loved her more than she really understood. She had sparkling brown eyes and an infectious laugh and had a lot of witty sayings... such as, "I don't know if I am washing or hanging out to dry;" or "I don't know if I'm shuckin or shellin'." Truly, may she rest in the peace of our Lord.

Moving Mom

After 7 years in Christian City, Union City, Georgia, mother has made a change to Azalea Estates. Mother will soon be 85 and with poor eyesight, it seemed time for assisted living. Claudia and I have spent the past 10 days helping her relocate. It has been a huge challenge for her but she is doing well. We still need at least two more days to complete the project and then it is back to Richmond.

Springhill Baptist

What a wonderful day! Claudia and I shared what God is doing in Uganda. We also had the opportunity to meet Andy and Christina Berry's parents. What a special blessing. Andy and Christina are part of the the Kampala Urban Team and we had the joy of serving with them.

A Day in the Country

Isaac spent the the afternoon with Jaja and PeePaw. We eat, slept and had a bath in the sink. It was a good time!

Biking Again

Thanks to Randy, Paul, Brian, and others... I am riding my bike again. These guys at Kathleen Baptist (our home church) Fedex my bike from Florida. Great friends!

Whatever you want....

Friends are forever!

This is true because of our personal relationships with Jesus. Gordon and Bonnie were in the Richmond area for a little while. They served in the Masters Program of the IMB in Uganda. They are great servants here or there or wherever, loving the Lord and sharing the good news of Jesus!

Boxes are fun!!!

JUNE NEWSLETTER

June, 2008, Montpelier, VA, USA

Life has been very busy since we landed April 7 in Richmond, VA, and began loving on Isaac. We soon learned that Isaac would have a brother or sister in December. We are all excited and though we started having grandchildren late, we might catch up with many of you. HA. We are not happy that gas is $4 a gallon, since we are 25 miles out in the country from Richmond and Isaac; but we love where we are staying and have been blessed to have this lovely country home among deer, bluebirds, quail, horses, farms, honeysuckles, blackberries and wonderful paved, marked, country roads. We have enjoyed times of riding on smooth roads and with the wind in our faces and very little traffic; which has been orderly. And to enjoy walks in the mornings and not feel we will be hit by taxis, bodas, weaving drivers or inhaling gas and oil fumes; as we did in Uganda. But on the other side of “happy” is also a deep void of not being with our Ugandan brothers and sisters and feeling the warmth of their sincere love and greetings and smiles and happy spirits. We are happy to say that Anthony and Misti Shelton report things continue to go well with the ministry there in Kampala. Ministry has been very busy this summer in Kampala with a record number of volunteers and much good work has been accomplished. Please continue to PRAY for the work there and for their health and endurance as the Kampala Urban Team-the Sheltons, the Berrys, the Carsons and the Dormans-continue strongly in the work.

On our way to the US, we spent 6 days in England/Scotland We enjoyed the train ride from London-Edinburgh, the history and beautiful scenery. Then on to Richmond and after two weeks here with lots of hugs on Isaac, our friends, the Kights, brought our 8 trunks from Georgia, which a volunteer team brought back to US for us. Then they drove us to Danny’s mom’s in Atlanta. We spent 10 days with mom and during that time spoke at the home church of those volunteers, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, near Talledega, AL. This church has sent volunteers to Uganda for the past 3 years with plans for the 4th in January, 09, so we were so happy to be a part of the worship services and share about our work in Uganda. They are a wonderful supportive group to us and to the work there. We helped mom with some various issues such as doctor’s appointments, checking out some assisted living options and other business items and also spoke at her church, First Baptist, Fairburn, GA. Danny’s 90 year old uncle, Fred Hood, died while we were in town and we were able to attend his funeral and see family members on the Hood side that we had not seen in years. He lived a godly life and we were grateful that we could attend his funeral. We headed with mom to Myrtle Beach on May 2 to celebrate Danny’s brother, Charles’, 65th birthday. His daughters threw quite a party and many friends joined him for a roasted “Pig Pullin” with many tasty food items and delicious fresh huge strawberries. I had really missed the berries and Danny had missed good pork. It was great to celebrate time with them.

The following week we attended a Candidate Conference in Richmond to continue our process of going career. It was a week full of interviews, medical exams and training on items necessary to be done in this process. All seems to be going well with our application but we still have a few medical issues that have to be checked off the list. Pray that we will get a clean bill of health and can move forward in this process. Our consultant will present us to the SBC, IMB trustees, June 24. That is our last major hill but we still must have everything checked off with the medical. If all this goes well, we should be appointed September 10 in Jonesboro, GA. We have tried to keep things on schedule so that we could be appointed there which would be near mom, family and lots of friends and she could attend the appointment easily. So PRAY that we can have everything cleared within this next month and stay on schedule.

Jason surprised us on Mother’s Day and stayed with us for 6 days and that was a great time with him. Mom was with us six weeks and we traveled to St. Louis, MO, to spend a few days with Mable, dad’s 95 year old sister. While we were there we spoke about Uganda at her retirement center and also at a friend’s, Rudy Pulido, church, whom Danny had known in college. While Jason and Mom were in town, we had a family picture made and that was a delight to have 4 generations present. Please look at it…I am sure Danny will have it somewhere with this update.

We took mom back to Atlanta and we spent a VBS weekend at a former church, Fellowship Baptist, Rome, GA, and had a wonderful time sharing about Uganda and visiting with all those wonderful people. Their VBS offering of $3,362 was given to us for the work in Uganda and we were so blessed with that love gift and know what it will mean to the ministry there.

We left mom in Atlanta and went to Thomson, GA, near Augusta, and enclosed a shed we purchased and placed on Danny’s uncle Ralph Bullard’s place. We had not done such physical labor in the direct hot sun in quite a few years and it really was a hard three days of labor and my wrists and Danny’s shoulder still aren’t quite the same as before. Now we have to arrange a time to get to Florida and bring our things which we have in storage there. We are planning our trips carefully with the price of gas, and also working with our schedule of times we need to be in Richmond for meetings, so it may be August before we can get to Florida. We are anxious to be with the dear folks at Kathleen Baptist. And we still have not been to Mississippi to see my two sisters and I want to do that soon.

So, we are now in Richmond for a few days and have a speaking engagement in Charlottesville, VA, at Springhill Baptist, June 29, and then another week of Stateside Assignment meetings, July 7-14. We are also hoping to get some much needed rest and follow up with some other business issues. Last week, our friends, the Caldwells, who served in Uganda, came to see us in Richmond and we shared some time with them for 3 days before they began their journey back to Brownsville, TX. As you see, life and ministry have not been quite the same as our time in Uganda but we have enjoyed being a part of it all and have really needed to be back with family, friends and new acquaintances. It has all been a blessing. Please continue to PRAY for us that our schedule might work in such a way that we can be with several different groups as we travel. It is cost prohibitive to just go to one place and then return to Richmond and then go somewhere in a different direction. PRAY also for our career process and that it will continue as God so wills. PRAY for the ministry in Kenya. This work will be a challenge and a much needed job and we want to serve well there. PRAY for more to hear the call of God to dedicate themselves to missions. We need so many more to tell the story and to disciple new believers.

Thank you for your continued love and interest in our lives and we do pray our paths will cross with many of you. Thank you to many of you who have said, “Where are you???” Our contact numbers and address are included on this page and we would love to hear from you. Know of our love and interest for each of you and please update us about your lives and prayer requests.

Once again, we want to thank your support of the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Offering for International Missions. Southern Baptists have over 5,000 missionaries serving in over 135 countries.

We love you,
Danny and Claudia

Uganda Newsletter

March/April, 2008, Kampala, Uganda, Africa – and Richmond, Virginia

FAREWELL UGANDA, HELLO AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!

We are amazed to say that we have completed our three years in Kampala, Uganda, and have returned to the US. It is with a sad heart that these last words will be written about our farewell there for we truly will miss Uganda…all but the wearying traffic and poor, poor roads. We moved to the Baptist Mission guesthouse our last week to finish last minute packing and to be available for our Ugandan friends to come by for visits. Rose baked 10 banana breads and we just spent time with friends sharing banana bread and drinking Fanta Orange….which they love, but cannot afford. We were so humbled by many who came to pray over us before we departed. And many tears were shared; which shocked us, because Ugandans do not cry easily. Our hearts are knitted with so many of them and we beg you to continue to PRAY for the house churches, the celebration points and leaders there. There are many struggles to be faced and challenges to be met for the churches to remain strong and intact. PRAY for the team leaders, Anthony and Misti Shelton, who will give leadership to the house church movement in Kampala and throughout Uganda, and for the Berrys and the Carsons who are members of the team.

As we reflect upon our Uganda experience we would not have wanted to have been there without the sweet hand of the Lord to guide us, protect us and sustain us. And also, we did not want to be there without the love, encouragement and support given by so many of you to us; which has made our journey so much richer and sweeter. To you, we do express our deepest love and gratitude.

Uganda and Ugandans have indelibly imprinted their beauty, love and culture upon us and our lives are richer by having been influenced and blessed these three years of ministry. This would be too long if we began to culminate and remember all the people, the sharing, the evangelism, the joy and delight of their welcoming ways and a myriad of other things that have so blessed us. I won’t even try to express that on paper but am grateful that in small increments I have been able to do the newsletters each month; as much for our sakes as for those of you who have been so kind to read them and pray with us about many expressed needs.

But certainly the highlight of our ministry was the privilege to share Jesus with hundreds (with the help of volunteers and also our national brothers and sisters), and to see so hundreds come to a personal faith in Him. We were so strengthened in our ministry by a huge number of volunteers who came and labored beside us and faithfully shared Jesus in some very difficult situations and circumstances. Also, we have been so blessed to have ministered among the poor, the sick and dying and those whose lives were truly poverty stricken and ill and life was quickly fading from them. We did not leave America knowing that those in such dire circumstances would be the ones among whom we would minister but we are grateful that God led us to this special group of people. We’ve been so challenged and encouraged to learn more about these dear folks who suffer greatly from the perils of poverty, diseases and ravages of war but who are so precious and grateful for anything and who really have so few expectations. We have been challenged by a people whose love for God and their worship of Him is filled with great feeling, joy, praise, pathos and prayer. They are not ashamed in the least to express deep and humble praise and gratitude to Him for their lives and salvation. And then for sure it has been a blessing to be able to give Bibles to people who had never had the privilege to have or to hold a Bible of their own in their language. Many of you gave money for Bibles and we do wish you could see these Bibles being used in the services scattered out all over the city. PRAY for God’s Word to flourish.

We are certainly enjoying being home with our family and friends and what a delight to be with our sweet grandson, Isaac, and he has never seemed afraid of us and comes to us very easily from his parents’ arms. He is one happy “fella” and makes our day with his smiles, arms outstretched, good disposition and hugs and kisses. We are 25 miles out from Richmond and we sure dislike the price of gas but we are still making our trek in to the city as often as we can. We have had several weeks with Danny’s mom, who lives in Atlanta, and she is now in Richmond with us until first part of June. And then Jason surprised us on Mother’s Day and had a 5 day visit. So we are having a wonderful time here with family. But we do miss our precious friends and relationships in Kampala.

We have completed our Candidate consulting interviews and medical assessments and if we get medical clearance we will be moving to Kenya in latter part of 2008. We are not sure about the date now as we just found out we are going to be grandparents again December 16. If possible, we would like to postpone our return until later in December and see another Hood enter the world. We may have become grandparents late in life but we might catch up quickly. HA. PRAY for our medical clearance to go smoothly.

We are speaking in churches and looking forward to doing more of that in these coming months. It has been a delight to already see many of you and we look forward to seeing others in the coming months. Our friends and prayer supporters have been so meaningful in the work of the Lord through us in Kampala. Thank you so much for faithfully lifting us up to the Father these three years and many other ways you have shared in our lives. We are grateful for this experience and for the support of brothers and sisters in the Lord who give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and the Cooperative Program in your churches. Please know that those two aspects of giving help to keep us and 5,000+ other missionaries on the field around the world.

We love you and so look forward to our paths crossing in future months.

Candidate Conference at the IMB

This past week was pretty intense. From Tuesday morning with medical exams through Friday evening with wrap up with our candidate consultant, it has been non-stop. With all that, it has been a great week... meeting other folks from all over the USA ...going to places all over the globe. How exciting to be numbered with them, even for a little while.

We are to be recommended to the Trustees of the International Mission Board on June 24th, and if approved, we will be appointed September 10th in Jonesboro, Georgia. We must have medical clearance before appointment time. Hopefully, there will be no delays.

Thanks for praying for us. We have received several invitations to speak. We trying to get to as many places as possible. It sure is fun serving the Lord.

Alabama - Mt. Zion Church

While at Mt. Zion, Herman Helms and his wife, Susan, not only provided lodging for us but took us to a nearby State Park. It was so beautiful and peaceful. We were treated like royalty by these gracious friends.

Mt. Zion Baptist Church

Pastor Gary and the members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Alexandria, Ala. are committed to reaching people for Jesus...where they live and on volunteer trips to other places, like Uganda. They came every year we were in Uganda and are planning another trip in January 2009.
It was our joy to be hosted for a Sunday evening service with these wonderful people.

GRANDPARENTS--AGAIN

We are far behind with updates... BUT... we want you to know that Tim and Janet annouced last Sunday that we are going to be Grandparents AGAIN--- Baby due December 16th!!! God is blessing us again. I gave Tim a week to tell and I can wait no longer.

Claudia's Update since arriving in the U.S.A.

This is not a newsletter...just an update...but will soon post our last newsletter from last month in Uganda. We are so excited to be back to spend these first days with sweet Isaac, and of course, his mother and dad, and to be able to touch base by cellphone (only when in town), once we got that up and going. It took several days to work out a plan for email but now have that accomplished. So we are beginning to feel more at home. Our setting here is so lovely out in the country and we are very grateful for the Keen's sharing it with us.

Our departure from Uganda was most difficult and time passed all too quickly those last weeks. We do miss them all so very much and parting was such sweet sorrow. They are such wonderful people and we were so blessed to be there three years. We will share more later.

We had great flights home and took 6 days while in London to ride a train to Edinburgh, Scotland, a very beautiful city. We took a 3 day tour around Scotland and even looked for the Loch Ness monster...ha...but did not see him. All our luggage followed us and arrived with us in Richmond. That was a huge blessing for sure.

We leave Monday, 21, to go to Atlanta to spend days with Mom, and then she will travel with us the next weekend to speak on the 27th at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, near Talledega, and then will return to Atlanta for another week with her and then to Myrtle Beach on May 3 to see Danny's brother and family. We have been invited to the Candidate Conference so will return here May 4 for a week of interviews, orientation, physicals and other things in the process toward the career appointment. Pray that we can pass each step. Then it is Mother's Day and it will be great to be a grandmother this year. Plus, Jason will come down a few days from NYC.

Okay, Chick-fil-A is calling and we hear Isaac too....so will close for now....our friends, Hulyn and Anne Kight, arrive tomorrow with trunks that our volunteers from Mt. Zion brought back for us so I am having to do some housework...and I am not so familiar with that anymore...ha.

Danny has loaded the blog with pictures of Isaac as you can see....

What can I say?!

Isaac plays the piano and Danny cuts the grass....

Isaac...Isaac...Isaac

Our New Home

For the next 6 or so months this is where we are living...Bumpass, Va. We are about 20 minutes (depends on whose driving) beyond MLC ... in the country! It's nice and quite. We can't get phone calls. We have mother's ATT cell phone and there no signal out here. We have email after a week. It is Verizon wireless. We get one and half towers. We are about 40 minutes from Isaac. We have driven into Richmond everyday! I know, it's got to stop!

Billy and Connie Keen owe the house where we are staying. They want to use it as a missionary home. We are the first ones! We are very grateful to them.

We've Returned

After 3+ years in Kampala, we have returned to the United States.
